Former presidential aide and social commentator, Reno Omokri, has cautioned Nigerian parents against the common practice of comparing their children to others, warning that such pressure has driven many young people into crime and prison abroad.
In a statement on Sunday, August 24, 2025, Omokri noted that the phrase “see your mate,” often used by parents in scolding their children, has contributed to destructive behavior among youths who feel compelled to meet unrealistic expectations.
He said: “As a parent, avoid telling your children, ‘See your mate.’ That three-word phrase is why many Nigerians are in prison in Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and India. As a parent, you may even have mates like Aliko Dangote, Elon Musk, and Bayo Ogunlesi, who you don’t measure up to. Therefore, stop measuring your children against their mates. Measure them to their potential.”
Omokri emphasized that every child is unique and should be encouraged to grow at their own pace, guided by their abilities and personal aspirations rather than external comparisons.
His advice is said to come amid growing conversations on parenting styles, youth development, and the psychological effects of family pressure in Nigeria, where many young people face both economic hardship and social expectations.
