Dr. Oluranti Afowowe, a political scholar from the Department of History and International Studies, Osogbo, said the deaths of MKO Abiola and General Sani Abacha were not mysterious but appeared to be deliberate acts orchestrated by powerful international interests.
In an interview recently published by Edmund Obilo, he explained that both men died under strikingly similar circumstances, raising questions about the forces at play in Nigeria’s political history.
Afowowe described the military leaders as pawns on the chessboard of global powers who made decisions to protect their interests in Nigeria.
He revealed that the deaths of Abacha and Abiola followed a pattern, pointing out that both were reported to have foam in their mouths and neither had a serious illness at the time.
He recalled that Abacha, despite previous health challenges, was not critically sick before his sudden death, just as Abiola was reported to have collapsed shortly after taking tea.
In his words, “Well, I don’t think that it is mysterious. I think it is a planned work. I’m just getting to know. All these generals were like pawns on the chessboard of international players. I mean, the international global hegemony.”
“It’s like they are being programmed to accomplish certain purposes. I think some people somewhere took the decision that for their interest to be perpetuated and defended in Nigeria, that two key actors must go, MKO Abiola and General Sani Abacha.”
“What I found interesting was both of them died the same way. There was information that there was foam in their mouth and the rest of it.”
“I mean, not that they had any serious sickness. Abacha had been sick several times. But at that particular time, not that he had any serious sickness. It’s just like Abiola took his own tea and before you knew it, he was dead. And the same thing happened to Abacha.”
