Former General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Nigerian Army’s Mechanised Division, Ali Keffi, has alleged that the Nigerian forces arrested a Boko Haram leader who was subsequently released along with five other key terrorist figures without prosecution.
Speaking in an interview with Arise TV, General Keffi revealed frustration over the release of high-value terrorist suspects despite successful operations to capture them. “We arrested the leader of Boko Haram, and I don’t want to mention his name, but I understand and I learned that he was released along with the five key guys. And that leader of Boko Haram, the United Arab Emirates shared that intelligence with us,” he stated.
The former commander detailed the arrested leader’s role in recruiting terrorists who were subsequently prosecuted and convicted. “And he was the one who even recruited the six individuals that were jailed—two for life, one for 30 years, one for 10 years, another one for 10 years, another one for 5 years. The six of them—he was the recruiter of that,” General Keffi explained.
He expressed bewilderment over the decision to release the terrorist leader and his associates without legal proceedings. “And yet, that man, he and the five other guys who had done this, were released. I don’t know for what reason. I don’t know what reason. They were never prosecuted—to the best of my knowledge, I don’t know whether they were, but they were never prosecuted,” he said.
General Keffi connected his concerns about past releases to current terrorism cases, expressing hope for different outcomes. “So you see, that’s the kind of fear—if I may use that term, the word—the fear that one has over what has happened right now in terms of the arrest of those Ansaru leaders. We hope that what we see will come to stay,” he said.
