An Anambra National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Jennifer Edema Elohor, has spoken out about the horrific assault she suffered at the hands of members of a vigilante group in the state.
Narrating her ordeal on Thursday, Jennifer revealed how a normal day suddenly turned into a nightmare after she was accused of misconduct and manhandled by the operatives.
According to her, the incident happened while she was returning from the market. She said she was stopped, questioned about her identity, and despite showing her NYSC uniform and ID card, the vigilantes still claimed she was “suspicious.”
“They accused me of things I didn’t do. Before I knew it, they descended on me, beating me and calling me names. I kept shouting that I was a corps member, but they wouldn’t listen,” she recounted.
Jennifer added that she strongly believes she was deliberately targeted. “I don’t know why they picked on me, but I feel it was intentional. If not for passers-by who intervened, I don’t know what would have happened,” she said.
The attack left her with visible injuries and deep emotional trauma. The shocking incident has sparked widespread outrage among corps members and residents, with many describing the actions of the vigilante operatives as “excessive and unprovoked.”
The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has since condemned the assault, describing the behavior of the vigilante members as unacceptable and calling for accountability.
