Renowned cleric and social commentator, Isa El-Buba has lamented the destruction of farmlands by herders, describing the situation as one of the biggest threats to food security in Nigeria.
Speaking during an interview on News Central TV from 4:46, El-Buba narrated his personal experience of how cultivated rice farms were wiped out within two days by cattle.
“I established a farm, gave people farm and the people farmed rice. Just within 48 hours, some boys moved in their cows and ate everything,” he recounted with visible frustration.
El-Buba explained that his initiative was aimed at empowering local farmers by providing them with land to cultivate crops and sustain their livelihoods, however, the destruction of the rice fields, he said, not only ruined the farmers’ efforts but also discouraged investments in agriculture at a time when the nation is battling food inflation and shortages.
He condemned the lack of accountability for such actions, stressing that repeated cases of herders invading farmlands have worsened communal tensions across the country. According to him, incidents like this highlight why farmer-herder clashes persist, as victims are often left without justice or compensation.
“This kind of lawlessness cannot be allowed to continue if we want peace and progress. Farmers need protection and assurance that their sweat will not go to waste overnight,” he added.
El-Buba urged government authorities and community leaders to enforce stricter measures against the destruction of farmlands while promoting dialogue between herders and farmers to prevent recurring conflicts.
His remarks underscore the growing calls for urgent solutions to Nigeria’s food security challenges, which are being compounded by insecurity and unchecked open grazing practices.
