A human rights activist and lawyer, Dele Farotimi, has said the only thing he would have expected of the current Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, is perhaps a dancing competition for the state, criticizing what he described as the government’s misplaced priorities.
He stressed that the administration has focused on frivolities while neglecting essential sectors like education, healthcare, and workers’ welfare.
Speaking during an interview with News Central TV, Farotimi explained that Osun is poor in terms of federal allocation but rich in both human and material resources.
He lamented that successive governments, including the present one, have been marked by leaders with limited imagination, leaving the state underdeveloped despite its potential.
He added that the current governor has failed to turn Osun into a destination for tourism or cultural activities, despite his public image being associated with entertainment. Instead, the administration appears more concerned with frequent travels and lavish spending.
Farotimi criticized the high expenditure of the state on air travel and feeding, noting that such choices expose a culture of excess among the governor, the speaker, and other top officials.
He pointed out that Osun spends more on luxury and movement than on primary healthcare and tertiary education, while retirees continue to wait for unpaid gratuities and pensions.
According to Farotimi, “When there is a disconnect between those who govern and the persons they govern, it becomes easier to find the evidence when you look at the budgeting.”
“In a state like Osun, that’s my home state. It’s a very poor state in terms of federal allocation, but it’s a very rich state in terms of human and material resources. But unfortunately, it has always been bedeviled by people with limited imagination.”
“The only thing I would have expected of the current governor is maybe a dancing competition for the state, but unfortunately, he has not even thought fit to make the state a destination for dancers.”
“But he appears to have found the capacity to travel a lot. And the gluttonous ability and capacity of the persons in that state appears to also be evidenced by the sizes of the persons who are in governance in that state.”
