According to a report by Punch on 21th August, 2025, the city of Abeokuta, Ogun State, was thrown into chaos, when a violent clash between rival cult groups left several people dead and many residents terrified.
The attack happened in the Aregbe area, close to the state police headquarters, and quickly spread to nearby communities.
According to eyewitnesses, the violence began suddenly in the afternoon. Traders and buyers were going about their normal business when gunshots rang out without warning. Panic followed immediately, with people running for safety while others hid behind stalls and buildings.
One witness told The PUNCH that he was buying toiletries when he saw the Divisional Police Officer and his team rushing out of the station. “It felt like war,” he said. Within minutes, at least four young men were shot dead in broad daylight, leaving the community in shock.
The gun battle was linked to a confrontation between members of the Eiye and Aye confraternities. What started as a targeted attack quickly escalated into a bloody fight that drew in multiple neighborhoods. The violence extended beyond Aregbe to Somorin, Anobi, and Alogi, forcing residents to abandon the streets.
Shaken by what he saw, another eyewitness described the incident as pure horror. “Initially, I thought cultists’ rampage thrived more in Lagos than any state in Nigeria, but what I witnessed proved me wrong. It was carnage,” he said. His words captured the fear that gripped Abeokuta that day.
While some reports suggested two deaths, others confirmed four fatalities. Residents agreed, however, that the killings were brutal and left the community traumatized. Shops closed abruptly, markets were deserted, and families locked themselves indoors until the situation calmed down.
The fact that the clash took place near the state police headquarters shocked many residents.
Cultists, armed and determined, carried out the attacks without fear of law enforcement. This raised questions about the strength of security measures in the state and the boldness of cult groups.
For many in Abeokuta, the events of that Saturday were a turning point. The city, known for its history and culture, was transformed into a war zone, leaving behind blood, grief, and fear. People who witnessed the clash say they will never forget the horror of that day.
