Chief Jack Adokiye is a retired Nigerian soldier whose life story offers a rare and invaluable firsthand perspective on one of the most turbulent moments in the country’s history — the April 22, 1990 coup attempt led by Major Gideon Orkar against General Ibrahim Babangida. Having served as a corporal at the time, Adokiye’s recollections shed light on the confusion, fear, and human drama that unfolded during the failed coup, giving a ground-level account often missing from the official historical records.

During a detailed interview on AGBALETU TV UNCENSORED WITH DELE ADEYANJU, Chief Adokiye began by making it clear that he was not a willing participant in the plot, but was instead tricked into it at the last minute.

I never even knew that they were planning a coup. He was one of my officers at the directorate. At that time, General Ibrahim Babangida was the military head of state. And at that time too, the coup was popular or became popular as the Orkar coup.”
