According to a report by Punch on Sunday, August 17, 2025, Prof. Tukur Muhammad-Baba, National Publicity Secretary of the Arewa Consultative Forum, has questioned Labour Party leader Peter Obi’s promise to serve only one term if elected president, describing it as weak and uninspiring.
In his remarks, Muhammad-Baba dismissed the one-term pledge as “politically naïve,” arguing that it is not a constitutional provision and therefore cannot be taken seriously.
“We have heard this kind of promise before,” he recalled. “The late President Muhammadu Buhari once said he would serve only one term. Did it happen? No. So, when people make such pledges, I don’t take them seriously.”
According to him, what Nigerians need from presidential candidates is not token promises but concrete plans for governance. “If Obi truly wants to be president, let him campaign on issues, competence, justice, equity, and his governance record, not on a promise that even he knows cannot and should not be binding,” he advised.
Muhammad-Baba noted that politics is dynamic, and if a president performs well, Nigerians should not be denied the right to re-elect him. “If Peter Obi were to win and do very well, it would be a betrayal of the Nigerian people not to run again,” he said.
He argued that Obi’s campaign strategy should be built on presenting bold solutions to Nigeria’s pressing problems. “Nigeria is facing insecurity, economic stagnation, and ethnic tensions. These are the issues that matter. A one-term promise is not inspiring.”
The ACF spokesperson urged politicians to focus on competence, inclusivity, and delivery, adding that Nigerians are looking for leaders who can unite the nation and govern effectively, not mere symbolic pledges.
