Dr. Grema Kyari, leader of the North East Concerned Group and head of the ‘Bring Back Our Goodluck’ campaign, has urged former President Goodluck Jonathan to run again in 2027. He made this appeal during a press conference in Maiduguri, saying Nigeria is facing serious problems and needs a leader like Jonathan, according to report by Vanguard on Thursday August 14, 2025.

Dr. Kyari said the country is struggling with poverty, insecurity, and division. He believes Jonathan showed true leadership in 2012 when people protested against fuel subsidy removal. Jonathan listened and adjusted the policy to reduce the suffering of citizens.

He also praised Jonathan for peacefully handing over power in 2015, even before final results were announced. That move helped prevent violence and showed respect for democracy.

Dr. Kyari admitted that many people in the North East were misled during Jonathan’s time. He said false stories were spread that Jonathan supported Boko Haram. Now, he says those claims were wrong and apologized on behalf of those who believed them.

He added that Jonathan was removed from office due to foreign influence and political games. Kyari described him as a peaceful and fair leader who cared about all Nigerians, regardless of tribe or religion.

Dr Kyari said,

”When Jonathan’s administration attempted to remove fuel subsidies in 2012 and Nigerians protested under the ‘Occupy Nigeria Movement’, President Jonathan listened. He partially reversed the policy to ease the suffering of the masses – a mark of humility and democratic leadership, compared to the current government’s abrupt removal of fuel subsidies without consultation or adequate safety nets, which has caused untold hardship and unrest.”
