According to a report by Daily Post on Friday, August 15, 2025, Factional National Chairman of the Labour Party, Julius Abure, has strongly criticized the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, accusing him of desperation to become Nigeria’s president.
In a statement he personally signed on Thursday, Abure blamed Obi for the ongoing crisis within the Labour Party, alleging that the former Anambra State governor’s relentless pursuit to dominate the party’s leadership has caused significant turmoil.
Abure claimed that Obi, despite receiving considerable goodwill and support from party leaders, has betrayed their trust by fostering division and unrest.
He described Obi as lacking the competence, character, and capacity needed to realize the vision of a new Nigeria, warning Nigerians not to forget Obi’s role in destabilizing the party. According to Abure, it was Obi himself who ignited the internal conflicts that are now being used as reasons to discourage support for the Labour Party.
“Nigerians should not forget in a hurry that it was Peter Obi that created the crisis in the Labour Party which he is now citing as a reason why people should not vote for the party,” Abure said.
This statement from Abure came as a reaction to Obi’s recent instructions to his supporters ahead of the August 16 by-elections in various states across Nigeria. Obi had urged his followers to support candidates from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a move that has stirred controversy within his party.
Abure’s remarks suggest that Obi’s directive to back a rival party’s candidates has deepened divisions within the Labour Party and further complicated its political standing.
The feud highlights the intense power struggle within the Labour Party, as different factions contest control and influence ahead of future elections. Abure’s criticism paints Obi as a divisive figure whose actions threaten the party’s unity and credibility. On the other hand, Obi’s strategic call for support of ADC candidates may reflect his broader political calculations in navigating Nigeria’s complex electoral landscape.
As the by-elections approach, the Labour Party finds itself grappling with internal discord and leadership challenges, which could impact its performance and public perception. The ongoing dispute between Julius Abure and Peter Obi underscores the fragile state of the party and raises questions about its ability to present a united front in upcoming elections.
With tensions running high, all eyes will be on how the Labour Party resolves its internal conflicts and whether it can regain stability to effectively champion its vision for Nigeria’s future.
