Former Minister of Information and Culture, Professor Jerry Gana has revealed that former President Goodluck Jonathan erred in seeking re-election in 2015, insisting that the advice given to him by close associates was ignored.

Speaking in an interview on TVC News, Gana explained that those in Jonathan’s inner circle had warned him that his victory in the 2011 presidential election was, in essence, his second term in office. This interpretation, he said, was based on Jonathan’s assumption of the presidency in 2010 following the death of President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.

“Jonathan made a mistake in 2014, because we that were very close to him told him that look, your election in 2011 was your second term,” Gana stated.

According to him, the political climate at the time was tense, with growing opposition and public discontent over various national issues. He stressed that the decision to contest again in 2015 went against the counsel of experienced political allies, ultimately altering Nigeria’s political trajectory.

Gana, a respected elder statesman and academic noted that Jonathan’s choice gave the opposition a rallying point, which they leveraged to secure victory in the 2015 general elections. He maintained that had the former president heeded the warnings, the Peoples Democratic Party might have retained its dominance in national politics.

The former minister also hinted that the 2015 elections marked a turning point in Nigeria’s democratic journey, setting the stage for new political dynamics and altering the balance of power between major parties.
