Residents of Yelewata community in Benue State recently staged a protest after another deadly attack on the area claimed multiple lives.
One of the protesters, a woman who spoke to AIT from 1:01, said the attack happened around 8 a.m. She said soldiers stationed at the community refused to go into the bush and confront the attackers.
The woman said Mobile Police Force (Mopol) officers entered the bush, chased away the attackers and later returned with the bodies of the villagers who had been killed.
The woman also said this was why residents of Yelewata blocked the road in protest, demanding the withdrawal of soldiers from the community.
In Her Words: “Around 8 this morning, we heard gunshots. As it happened, these Mopols were called to go and pursue those people inside the bush. Soldiers didn’t agree to enter the bush; it was the Mopols who entered to pursue those people and then carried the dead bodies back. That is why we blocked the road, saying that soldiers should leave this place; we don’t need soldiers.”
