Former Minister of Youth and Sports, Solomon Dalung, has revealed that he once had a conversation with former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, regarding Obi’s widely discussed one-term proposal for the Presidency.

Speaking in an interview with Trust TV News, Dalung disclosed that Peter Obi told him the issue of a second-term Presidency in Nigeria has had a negative impact on the nation’s democracy.

He stated:

“The idea of a single term has nothing to do with the coalition, it is just the general conviction of Peter Obi because I have engaged him on it. He told me that what has destroyed our democracy is the issue of second-term. He believes that a single term is enough for a person to make impact.”

Dalung argued that public office holders often become distracted by their second-term ambitions, abandoning governance to focus on campaigns and re-election activities.

He asserted that the current administration led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is a clear example of this, citing early endorsements and campaign activities for 2027 as evidence.

Dalung further remarked that he would not be surprised if the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) eventually endorses President Tinubu, given the speed at which his administration appears to be pursuing a second term.

His words: “You have APC going around doing endorsements, they have concluded their political endorsements. Very soon, we are going to have imams and pastors endorsing them. Then, we would have the INEC endorse them and maybe the judiciary.
