Bitha Wanjiku Onkige has opened up about her early marriage and the struggles that have followed her throughout life, revealing a story of hardship, resilience, and survival.

Speaking during an interview with Afrimax English, Wanjiku recalled, “I got married when I was 14 years old. I finished class eight when I was 13 years old. I started giving birth when I was 18 years old. My life has been very tough, even till now.”

She explained that her marriage was not born out of love or readiness but out of financial desperation.

“My parents gave me out for marriage when I wasn’t ready, just because there was no money, so the marriage was for survival,” she said.

Wanjiku described her upbringing as emotionally distant. “I got married because I was not comfortable with where I was born. I knew my mother but not my father,” she recounted.

According to her, there was no wedding celebration, no heartfelt conversation — only a sudden handover, as though she were a responsibility passed on.

She was expected to instantly transform into a wife, navigating adulthood before she had the chance to experience her teenage years.
