A federal lawmaker representing Kogi State, Honourable Leke Abejide, has argued that former President Goodluck Jonathan is constitutionally prohibited from contesting the 2027 presidential election due to term limit restrictions.

Speaking in an interview with MIC On Podcast, Abejide firmly rejected the possibility of Jonathan returning to the presidential ballot based on legal restrictions. “Goodluck Jonathan can’t spend more than two terms, he cannot even contest any longer. According to the law, you cannot be sworn in twice. It’s a law,” he stated definitively.

The Kogi representative warned of severe legal consequences should Jonathan attempt to circumvent constitutional provisions. “So, he cannot even dare it. If he wins the person who came second will take it from him,” Abejide declared, suggesting automatic disqualification would occur.

Beyond constitutional arguments, the lawmaker expressed confidence that President Tinubu would easily defeat Jonathan in any hypothetical contest. “Even if he’s on the ballot, President Tinubu will defeat him like no man’s business,” Abejide stated boldly.

He characterized the two politicians as fundamentally different in their capabilities and standing. “Do you know the person that you are contesting again? They are not contesting with a reputation like Jonathan. These are two different people,” the lawmaker argued.

He provided historical context to support his assessment of Tinubu’s political acumen, referencing events from 2003 involving former President Obasanjo. “You know what happened in 2003 when Obasanjo deceived them and asked them to support him so that he will support them in AD, and he used the system to take them off,” he recalled.

The lawmaker praised Tinubu’s resilience during that period as evidence of superior political understanding. “But this president was the only progressive governor standing. He didn’t; he understood this system more than anybody. We are all following his footsteps,” the Kogi representative said.
