According to Times of Israel, on August 8, 2025, Israel is considering halting security cooperation with the United Kingdom if the UK moves forward with recognizing a Palestinian state this September, according to unnamed diplomatic sources cited by The Times.
The UK government has stated it will recognize Palestine unless Israel agrees to a ceasefire to end the ongoing conflict with Hamas in Gaza.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced that recognition would be conditional on Israel taking significant steps, including a ceasefire, halting annexations in the West Bank, allowing humanitarian aid deliveries, and paving the way for a two-state solution during the upcoming UN General Assembly in September.
A diplomatic source warned, “London needs to be careful because Bibi [Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu] and his ministers have cards they could play too.
Israel values its partnership with the UK but recent decisions mean it is coming under pressure and the UK has a lot to lose if Israel’s government decides to take steps in response.”
Expert analysis suggests that severing intelligence and security ties between Israel and the UK would carry severe consequences.
The Mossad intelligence agency has previously cooperated closely with British security services, including foiling an Iranian-linked terrorist plot at the Israeli embassy in London earlier this year.
Additionally, the UK has relied on Israeli military equipment in campaigns across Iraq and Afghanistan.
An official from the Israeli embassy commented to The Times, “This counterproductive move will certainly not contribute to deepening the mutually beneficial relations between Israel and those who advance this ill-faith agenda,” referring to the potential recognition of Palestine by London.
The UK’s planned recognition comes amid growing international pressure to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where ongoing hostilities have caused extensive civilian suffering.
The move reflects deepening frustration within the UK government and public over the stalled peace process and is aligned with similar announcements from France and other European nations.
