In an interview on Channels Television, Peter Ameh, former Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council, has highlighted growing discontent in the North towards President Tinubu. He stated that the support for Tinubu in the recent elections was based on specific agreements that are no longer in place. Ameh pointed out that the Northern vote for Tinubu was contingent on local understandings that have since changed, leading to dissatisfaction.
With a critical view of Tinubu’s performance, Ameh noted that the president faces significant challenges in the upcoming election, citing losses in key areas like the Federal Capital Territory and Lagos.
In his words, “In the 2023 election, there were dynamics that determined this course, you know, the votes that came from the Northeast and from the Northwest especially. Those understandings are no longer there. The votes that came from the Northwest were very clearly because Tinubu was the one on the ballot. There were clear decisions within the North as to why the APC should have that vote. But I’m telling you, those decisions are no longer there. That’s why you’re hearing that the North is not happy with Tinubu. Tinubu has neglected the North.”
“You can’t use this data to judge what will happen in 2027. Because I’m telling you, there’s a distinctive difference between what will happen in 2027 and what happened in 2023. Today, as we speak, more people have come to the realization that when you are contesting an election and you are running as someone in office, you must come with a scorecard. His record of performance determines how many votes he is going to get. The people have had a chance to govern for the past years. What are the records? What is the level of the Human Development Index in this country today? The data in the public does not reflect performance for the benefit of the people. The masses are suffering. The economy is stagnated. So these are the challenges Tinubu will face going into the next election. He even lost in the FCT and he lost to Lagos.
