Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), has criticised the Lagos State House of Assembly for planning to spend another ₦20 billion on vehicles, despite the high level of poverty in the state, as reported by Vanguard on Thursday, 7 August, 2025.
Falana spoke during the 2025 National Conference of Egbe Amofin O’dua, held in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
He said leaders often condemn corruption in Abuja but ignore similar actions happening in their own states.
He said the Lagos Assembly had already spent ₦45 billion on SUVs in the past four years.
Now, he said, they want to spend an additional ₦20 billion for the same purpose.
Falana asked why such huge amounts are spent on vehicles while many people in Lagos live in poverty.
He said it is wrong to neglect the needs of the poor while government officials continue to enjoy luxury.
He argued that the money could be used to fix roads, provide electricity, and improve basic services in the state.
He said it is unfair for leaders to live in comfort while ordinary people suffer.
Falana warned that if wasteful spending continues, the region will face more hardship.
He also pointed out that no strong emergency response was seen in Ikorodu during recent floods, showing a lack of care for the people.
“We are always quick to shout about the misappropriation and reckless spending of public funds in Abuja but in Lagos, after spending N45bn to procure SUVs in the first four years, the state House of Assembly is planning to spend more N20bn on the purchase of utility vehicles, yet the people are wallowing in poverty,” he said.
