The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), African Democratic Congress (ADC), Labour Party, and others criticised the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, for urging the South-East to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in 2027.

According to The Punch, Umahi, in a statement released on Monday, called on the South-East to back Tinubu, claiming it was in the region’s long-term interest. He said the President needed to secure up to 90 per cent of votes from the region to strengthen ties with the presidency.

Umahi urged the South-East to move away from what he described as politics driven by hate and misinformation, stressing the importance of political alignment with other regions.

He insisted that Tinubu deserved to complete his eight-year term and expressed confidence that the Igbo would eventually produce a president, though not in 2027.

A South-East chieftain and National Chairman of the National Rescue Mission, Edozie Njoku, called for caution, stating that it was not yet the appropriate time for political campaigns. He noted that Umahi was merely expressing his personal interest, and added that it would be up to the entire South-East to determine whether his position was acceptable.

Further talking, he said, “Where’s he coming from ? We’ve not even started campaigns yet, and he is making such a statement. On what basis is he saying that ? We should take seriously the challenges that are coming our way in 2027, because if we do not, we’ll be unprepared before the dancing starts.”

Njoku further stated that Umahi was simply expressing his own opinion as a minister in Tinubu’s administration, adding rhetorically that it was only natural for him to make such remarks, given his position.
