In a compelling video aired by Sahara TV, Omoyele Sowore, the former African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, sharply criticized the Federal Government’s plan to allocate ₦712 billion for the upgrade of Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos.
Sowore argued that the colossal sum is grossly excessive, asserting that it could fund the construction of at least five new international airports from the ground up.
In Sowore’s words: “I can’t believe that anybody is trying to fix the Murtala Mohammed international airport with 712 billion naira when as a matter of fact, I know that I can build 5 new airports with that of international standard. It was not long ago that Stella Oduah, former aviation minister, under Jonathan claimed they did the same thing at the airport and now the airport looks like the airport in Yemen.”
His remarks echo broader concerns about fiscal responsibility, particularly given the airport’s recent upgrades, including a new terminal commissioned in 2022.
Sowore’s stance reflects widespread public skepticism about the project’s cost, especially when compared to the $500 million Chinese loan that built four new airports in 2014. As Nigeria grapples with economic hardship, his call for accountability resonates with demands for redirecting funds to critical sectors like education and healthcare.
With the 2027 elections looming, Sowore’s outspoken criticism positions him as a vocal advocate for prudent governance, challenging the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration’s priorities amid growing public discontent.
