Former Kaduna Central Senator Shehu Sani has called for Nigeria’s informal power-sharing arrangement between the North and South to be maintained, warning that breaking the rotation ahead of the 2027 election could have serious implications for national unity.
Speaking during an interview from 1:09 on Channels Television on Friday, September 25, 2026, Sani reflected on the political relationship between northern and southern political leaders during former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.
He argued that Buhari was able to complete his eight-year tenure without facing a major political challenge from the southern part of the country.
“Whoever is going to be in a position of authority from the northern part of Nigeria should have the peace to do so. Buhari had his eight years in office; there was no serious challenge from the southern part of Nigeria to his government. And despite all that President Tinubu faced from 2015 to 2023, he never thought of raising any challenge to Buhari’s presidency. So I think it’s going to be fair to this country and to our political system that when the South has its eight years.
Sani’s remarks come amid renewed debate over the 2027 presidential election and the issue of power rotation between Nigeria’s northern and southern regions.
The former senator argued that maintaining the informal arrangement could help preserve political stability and national cohesion as parties and political actors prepare for the next general election.
