Deputy Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service BU Nwafor
According to a report by The Sun on Sunday, August 3, 2025, the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of deliberately frustrating the promotion of Deputy Comptroller General (DCG) BU Nwafor, who hails from Anambra State, to the position of Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service.
In a statement released by its National Publicity Secretary, Dr Ezechi Chukwu, Ohanaeze strongly condemned the President’s decision to extend the tenure of the current Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, who was due for retirement.
“President Tinubu, a few days ago, granted a one-year tenure extension to the current Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, who is already due for retirement, thereby shortchanging the next in line of succession, DCG BU Nwafor, whose retirement would be due in October 2026,” the group said.
The organisation expressed concern that with this extension, another senior officer, DCG KI Adeola, might be strategically positioned to take over the leadership of Customs in 2026, thereby bypassing Nwafor completely. Ohanaeze described this development as a clear case of institutional injustice and favouritism.
Ohanaeze further warned that such actions could deepen feelings of marginalisation among the Igbo and threaten national unity.
They called on President Tinubu to revisit and reverse what they described as “an obvious act of robbing Peter to pay Paul,” urging him to consider equity, fairness, and national cohesion in his decisions regarding key appointments.
