‎‎Retired Major General Ijioma Nwokoro Ijioma has called on Nigerians to support the emergence of a president of Igbo origin, saying the time has come for national fairness and unity, as reported by Vanguard on Saturday, 2 August, 2025.

‎He pointed out that since independence, Nigeria has been led by Hausa, Fulani, Yoruba, and even minority presidents, but never by someone from the South-East.

‎During the Ikengaonline town hall meeting, Gen. Ijioma reminded Nigerians of a past appeal by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who encouraged the country to give the Igbos a chance to lead.

‎He said this is an opportunity to correct a long-standing imbalance in the country’s leadership history.

‎He urged Nigerians, especially those feeling the effects of poor governance, to rally around Peter Obi, whom he described as a capable and trustworthy candidate.

‎He said Obi has the experience, vision, and discipline to move Nigeria forward and rescue it from its current economic and social struggles.

‎Gen. Ijioma criticized both the Nigerian political elite and some Igbo leaders for working against Obi’s presidential ambition.

‎He said their actions are driven by selfish interests rather than concern for the people or the country’s progress.

‎He called on Igbos at home and in the diaspora to stand firmly behind Obi as their best chance of producing a credible president.

‎According to him, Obi is not only the most qualified candidate from the South-East but also stands out among all presidential hopefuls across the nation.

‎Gen. Ijioma believes that with growing public support and frustration with the current government, Peter Obi is in a strong position to lead Nigeria in 2027.

‎He encouraged all Nigerians to put aside ethnic and political differences and back a candidate who can bring real change.

‎”I want to refer us to what the former President, Gen. Obasanjo said. He advised Nigerians to give Igbos a chance. Nigeria has been governed by Hausa, Fulani, Yoruba Presidents, even minority President, but they have not had truly a Nigerian President of Igbo extraction.

‎I urge Nigerians to rally around Peter Obi because Peter Obi has what it takes to take Nigeria out of the woods. It is only the Nigerian political elites and the Igbo political elites that are fighting against Peter Obi because of their own selfish interests. I want Ndigbo as a group of people, both at home and in the diaspora, to continue to rally around Peter Obi because I do not see any better candidate from all parts of Nigeria other than Peter Obi,” he said.
