Spiritual Director of the Adoration Ministry Enugu Nigeria, Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka has appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to release Nnamdi Kanu and assign him a role in resolving the unrest in the Southeast.

Speaking during a sermon at the Adoration Ministry, in a video shared online, Fr. Mbaka said Kanu’s continued detention is deepening the crisis in the region and urged the federal government to consider a more strategic approach toward peacebuilding.

“It is in the hand of the leader to save the Southeast from what we are passing through,” he stated. “Let Nnamdi Kanu be brought out and be given an assignment.”

Mbaka suggested that rather than being kept in detention, Kanu could serve as a tool for national unity and reconciliation if entrusted with the right responsibility.

The cleric emphasized that the insecurity plaguing the Southeast, including violent attacks, sit-at-home orders and growing tension demands a bold political solution, not just legal confrontation.

“Keeping him in custody has not solved the problem,” Mbaka stressed. “Let him come out and contribute to fixing what is broken. He knows his people, and they listen to him.”

Kanu has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since June 2021 after being extradited from Kenya under controversial circumstances. Despite repeated court orders for his release, the federal government has insisted on continuing prosecution.

Fr. Mbaka’s appeal adds to growing calls from leaders, activists, and traditional rulers who believe that engaging Kanu in dialogue may be key to ending the Southeast’s prolonged instability.
