Higher King, a political analyst, has spoken out about the upcoming local government elections in Rivers State. During an interview with News Central TV, he questioned the actions of the new Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) leadership and the sole administrator, Ibas.

King reminded everyone that RSIEC earlier cancelled the election Governor Fubara organized, claiming it did not follow legal procedures. RSIEC said it didn’t comply with their own laws or the guidelines of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

“You said the one the governor did last time, he didn’t comply with the provisions of the law, he didn’t comply with the RSIEC and INEC act and laws, and you nullified that election,” he said.

But King is now asking: “This one that they want to conduct now, have they complied?” He pointed to Section 20 of the RSIEC law, which says that at least three months’ notice must be given before an election. However, the RSIEC chairman just recently announced August 30 as the election date, which falls short of the required notice.

King also questioned why they want to now use the same timetable that was prepared by the previous commission under Fubara. “Why didn’t you follow that timetable when you immediately came into office?” he asked.

He also criticized Ibas for suspending the former RSIEC chairman and commissioners, only to later rely on the work they had already done.
