Abdulmajeed Dahiru, a political analyst, has stated that in 2014, Muhammadu Buhari received the presidential ticket of the APC without paying delegates for their votes. He said delegates who believed Buhari could fix the problems in Nigeria and defeat the ruling party at that time supported him freely.

In an interview with AIT, Dahiru said during that APC primary election, a certain aspirant spent thousands of dollars trying to win over the delegates, but even with all the money spent, that aspirant did not come second in the election. He said Buhari was chosen because he was seen as honest and trustworthy, and those who believed in his value helped him secure the ticket.

In Dahiru’s words: “Buhari got the ticket of APC in Lagos for free because those who saw him as a solution to the problem of Nigeria and a solution to defeating the PDP gave him that ticket free. Somebody spent 4 thousand dollars per thousand delegates at that convention against Buhari, the person didn’t come second in that primary election. They were well intentioned when they brought a man who told the delegates I have no silver or gold to give you, and they voted for that man because those who knew the value of that man supported him to get the ticket.
