Dr Najeem Folasayo Salaam is a two-term former speaker of Osun State House of Assembly, during an interview with The Nigerian Tribune correspondent, spoke about how the former governor Oyetola and Aregbesola’s political allies fell apart, as well as their suspension from All Progressives Congress, among other issues.
While talking during the interview, Salaam stated that it was not only Gboyega Oyetola who had aspired to succeed Rauf Aregbesola as governor; he, too, had nursed the ambition and contested for the party’s ticket.
However, he explained that the party leadership eventually settled on Oyetola, who at the time was serving as Aregbesola’s Chief of Staff. Salaam admitted that the decision was difficult and painful for him to accept, but he chose to abide by it.
Further talking, he said, “Of course, I was still the Speaker, but there was an understanding between us that when I completed my tenure, I would join him. And when I was about to complete it, I asked him about the appointment but he told me to go and rest for another two months. The two months have never come till today.”
Salaam stated that despite the outcome, he accepted it in good faith, acknowledging that one could not always be in power or hold a position of authority. However, he expressed surprise at what followed. According to him, the governor and his administration began distancing themselves from him and several others who had contributed significantly to the electoral victory.
He explained that, despite the collective efforts, sacrifices, and commitment they made to ensure the governor’s success at the polls, they were suddenly sidelined. Salaam further claimed that at some point, anyone associated with Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola was also deliberately avoided by the governor. He said he had no idea why that was the case, but that was the reality they faced.
He added that the hope of building a strong and cordial relationship with those who played key roles in bringing the administration to power was never realised, describing it as a disappointing part of the story.
