A prominent chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, Umar Sani has revealed that several influential leaders from the South-East region were noticeably absent from the party’s recent 101st National Executive Committee meeting, raising fresh concerns about internal cohesion within the party.

Speaking during an interview on Trust TV from 16:32, Sani disclosed that the meeting which was expected to rally unity ahead of the 2027 elections, suffered a major blow with the absence of high-profile figures from the South-East, a region that has traditionally been a stronghold of the PDP.

“The Southeast boycotted the meeting. The Governor of Enugu State was not there. The Chairman of the BoT, Adolphus Wabara was not there. Senator Ben Obi was not there and so many other very important Southeast personalities were not there. And so it’s a boycott and it’s a protest which means there is a little bit of something that had not been resolved,” he said.

Sani’s comments come amid growing concerns over the perceived marginalization of the South-East in PDP’s recent decisions, especially in leadership appointments and zoning arrangements.

Observers have noted that the absence of such key figures could signal deeper discontent within the South-East bloc of the PDP, potentially affecting the party’s performance in upcoming elections if not urgently addressed.

The PDP, once dominant in the region has witnessed growing defections and weakening grassroots support in recent years, with parties like the Labour Party gaining traction in the 2023 polls.

While no official reason was given for the absence of the South-East leaders, Sani’s disclosure underscores the urgent need for reconciliation within the party. Political analysts warn that continued alienation of a vital zone like the South-East could weaken PDP’s national standing ahead of the 2027 presidential race.
