The lawmaker representing Edo North Senatorial District, Adams Oshiomhole, maintained that the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, ought to inform Governor Monday Okpebholo ahead of any visit to the state.
He stated that doing so was a matter of decency and self-respect on Obi’s part.
According to a report by DAILY POST, Governor Okpebholo had earlier warned Obi against visiting Edo State without prior security clearance, linking a recent visit by the former presidential candidate to a security breach that allegedly led to the deaths of three people.
The governor’s comments, however, drew widespread backlash, with many accusing him of attempting to intimidate political opponents.
Reacting to the development during an appearance on Prime Time, an Arise Television programme, on Friday, Oshiomhole stressed the importance of notifying state authorities when prominent figures such as Obi intend to visit.
He further noted that the school Peter Obi was expected to visit is fully funded and maintained by the Edo State Government.
He said, “Let us face it; the property of the Edo State Government is entrusted in the hands of the Edo State governor. If anyone, myself included, goes to Enugu State, or Anambra State when Peter Obi was governor, and I want to visit a government-owned facility, like a nursing institution, it’s a matter of decency, and self-respect to inform the authorities.”
Further talking, he said, “He was my colleague, and we knew each other very well. I liked him then, and I still do, but politically, we do not agree. I do not subscribe to his views on certain matters.”
