According to a report by The Sun on Saturday, July 26, 2025, former Minister of Health, Professor ABC Nwosu, has expressed concern over the recent calls for Nigeria to revert to a parliamentary system of government.
He stated that such a move could bring instability to governance due to the deep-rooted ethnic divisions across the country.
According to him, the complex ethnic nature of Nigeria may encourage members of parliament to vote out Prime Ministers frequently, disrupting government continuity and weakening political stability.
Professor Nwosu, who served as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), shared his thoughts during a recent discussion where he also reviewed the state of the nation under the current administration.
He described the situation in the country as troubling and noted that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government is not delivering as expected.
Nwosu pointed out that this opinion is not influenced by political rivalry or animosity, but by a sincere concern for the country’s progress.
He revealed that despite his personal admiration for President Tinubu and several key members of his administration, he cannot ignore the hardship being faced by Nigerians.
Nwosu stated that the policies of the present government have not eased the economic pressure on the masses.
He particularly lamented the situation with the foreign exchange, saying it would be difficult for the country to recover from the current state if urgent corrective actions are not taken.
While reflecting on the early years of the PDP, Professor Nwosu explained that the party was originally formed to promote justice, transparency, and good governance.
However, he regretted that the party eventually lost its way when its leaders began to prioritize money and personal gains over the well-being of Nigerians.
He blamed this shift in focus for the party’s eventual fall from grace and its declining influence in the national political space.
In his remarks, Nwosu also recalled his interactions with former President Olusegun Obasanjo during their time in government.
He said he once questioned Obasanjo on what legacy they were giving to the Nigerian people.
In response, Obasanjo coined the popular phrase “Democracy dividend,” which became a slogan of his administration.
Nwosu said that phrase represented a deep desire to ensure that democracy brought tangible benefits to citizens.
He said: When Obasanjo was there, I said: ‘Sir what can we say we’ve given to the people?” Obasanjo went in and coined the phrase, ‘Democracy dividend’.
