Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar criticized President Bola Tinubu for focusing too much on the 2027 elections, accusing him of failing to deliver meaningful results from his 2023 mandate.

According to The Punch, in a statement released on Thursday by his media aide, Paul Ibe, Atiku called on the President to concentrate on fixing pressing national issues such as insecurity and economic decline, rather than interfering in opposition affairs.

Atiku’s remarks followed President Tinubu’s comments during the inauguration of the new APC National Chairman, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, where Tinubu suggested that more opposition members would defect to the ruling party, claiming they were abandoning a “sinking ship.”

Responding to the comment, Atiku said Tinubu appeared to be more interested in attacking opposition parties than addressing national challenges. He also urged the President to resolve his reported disagreements with Vice President Kashim Shettima.

Atiku alleged that Tinubu had turned criticizing the opposition into a routine while the country continued to suffer under his leadership. He described the President’s actions as a diversion from the growing problems within his administration.

Atiku’s camp stated that President Tinubu and his political allies had allegedly been fueling internal crises within opposition parties. They expressed disbelief that the presidency would go as far as using limited public resources to create internal divisions, all in an attempt to undermine alternative political voices.

Further talking, he said, “We’re fully aware that the supposed tensions between supporters of Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi within the Coalition were orchestrated by the presidency. Unfortunately for them, their divisive game has failed – the cracks have been sealed, and the Coalition stands stronger than ever.”
