In 1978, countries like Nigeria, Chad, Malawi, and Cameroon had a higher GDP per capita than China. It’s shocking, but true — Africa was ahead economically while China was still finding its feet after years of political instability.

So what changed?

While China launched aggressive reforms, focused on industrialization, and became a manufacturing powerhouse, many African countries got trapped in political corruption, civil unrest, and foreign dependency. The result? A massive economic gap that continues today.

But it didn’t have to be this way.
