Sam Aboyeji, the General Overseer of Foursquare Gospel Church in Nigeria, has shared how the church has grown over the past 70 years not just in faith, but in shaping society. He explained that the church has moved beyond preaching to making real impact in politics, education, and community service.
Speaking in an interview with The Nation, Sam Aboyeji said the church trains not just pastors but leaders who influence national laws, like a Senator who backed the same-sex marriage ban.
He said, “Yes. Some of our members have served in national politics. A notable example is the Senator who moved the motion against same-sex marriage—he is a member of our church. So, yes, we’ve impacted governance, legislation, and social values.”
The church was founded in 1955 by American missionaries and now has over 5,000 branches across Nigeria. It has also spread to other African countries. Over the years, it has focused on medical outreach, youth programs, music events, and helping communities in need.
