According to a report by Channels Television on July 19, 2025, Governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo, has accused the opposition coalition parties of being responsible for Nigeria’s longstanding challenges, alleging that many of their top figures looted public funds and fueled insecurity during their time in power.

The governor made these remarks on Saturday, July 19, during a high-profile defection ceremony held in Uromi, Esan North-East Local Government Area. The event saw the formal defection of several members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), including a federal lawmaker, to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Governor Okpebholo stated: “There are some people that were Senate President for many years, they could not take root of their community. There were some people that sold Nigerian assets. There are also some people that brought Boko Haram kidnappers into Nigeria. They use their mouth to say, yes, we brought them in. Are these the kind of people that we need in this country? Today they said they are coming together, they want to form one party. Today they will say it’s SDP. Tomorrow they will say it’s ADC. Next tomorrow they will say it’s ADA. Where are they? They don’t have capacity.”

He emphasized his administration’s achievements, attributing the support to President Bola Tinubu: “Everything you see I’m doing in Edo today, who is giving me money? Who is giving me money?”

The crowd responded by shouting, “Asiwaju,” referring to the president.

Okpebholo added confidently: “So now that we know this, 2027 is guaranteed.”

Also speaking at the event, Hon. Marcus Onabun, representing Esan Central and Esan West/Igweben Federal Constituency in the National Assembly, stated his defection to APC was driven by the performance of the current administration and his desire to support an Esan-born governor: “I am excited to be standing before the leaders of Isaland today to identify with a unifier that will transform Esan land to a developer site. As a true son of Esan land, who yearned for the development of Esan, and who joined to lend his voice that we needed governor of Edo State from Esan land. Now that we have one, we must all now at this point join hands together to support him to develop Edo State from Esan land.”
