A PDP chieftain, Dr. Adetokunbo Pearse, has warned that the Southeast region may never produce a Nigerian president unless power rotation is constitutionally enshrined.

Speaking during an interview with News Central TV, Dr. Pearse highlighted the structural challenges facing the Southeast in national elections. “If we do not rotate the presidency in this country the way our country is, nobody from the southeast will ever be president of Nigeria. You know why the votes are not there? Look at the population; when you go to election, how many delegates are going to come from the southeast? How many delegates? Very few because of the number of states, number of local government areas, and so on.”

He highlighted that whoever wants to be President from the Southeast without power rotation will be at the mercy of the North. “The north will always dominate. So if you become president because the North want you to be president, so they negotiate you into power; so you are probably working for them. So it is until we have those changes in our constitution,” he explained.

He positioned the PDP as the solution to this challenge, arguing that only his party possesses the philosophy and commitment to implement necessary changes. He emphasized that the PDP has developed a template for ensuring power rotation among Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.

Looking ahead to the 2027 elections, Pearse expressed confidence in his party’s prospects. He revealed that the PDP’s candidate will demonstrate clear differences from other contenders, noting that whoever emerges from the party’s primary will advocate for restructuring, constitutional changes to improve Nigerians’ living conditions, and strengthening democratic institutions.

The Southeast has long sought the presidency since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999. The region came closest to achieving this goal in 2023 when former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, running under the Labour Party, secured over 6 million votes in the presidential election.
