Former senator and social commentator, Shehu Sani, has raised concerns over some traditional practices in parts of Nigeria that he believes are outdated and harmful.

In a post on his social Media page (X account), Sani expressed happiness that many traditional institutions are now dropping what he described as “fetish practices” linked to choosing new kings or chiefs when the previous ones die.

He shared a shocking example of a particular community in the central part of Nigeria, where, according to him, a new monarch must “eat the heart” of the late monarch before being allowed to take the throne.

Sani did not mention the name of the community, but he described the practice as barbaric and called for it to end if it still exists.

“There is a community in the Central part of this country where the new monarch has to ‘eat the heart’ of the late Monarch before ascending the throne. I hope they have stopped. We must separate our culture from barbarity,” he wrote.
