According to Daily Post on July 16 of 2025, Labour Party leader Peter Obi paid a heartfelt condolence visit to the family of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari in Daura, Katsina State, overcoming major travel hurdles to do so.
Obi shared that reaching Daura was particularly challenging due to the closure of Katsina airport, which was shut down to accommodate the large number of high-profile mourners arriving for Buhari’s funeral. He explained that even chartered flights couldn’t land because of the heavy security presence and restrictions at the airport.
Despite these difficulties, Obi made the journey on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, joined by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai. Their visit followed the state burial of Buhari, which took place the day before and attracted an extraordinary number of dignitaries, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, top government officials, and international envoys.
The increased security around the Umaru Musa Yar’adua Airport had been part of preparations to receive Buhari’s remains, which contributed to the transport delays. Nevertheless, Obi’s persistence in attending the condolence visit reflects a rare show of unity and mutual respect among Nigeria’s political leaders, emphasizing the spirit of national solidarity that has emerged in the wake of the former president’s death.
