Senate President Godswill Akpabio has officially filed an appeal against a recent court ruling that ordered the immediate recall of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan to the Senate.

The court decision, which had directed the Senate leadership to reinstate the Kogi Central lawmaker, was seen as a major victory for her supporters and a setback for Akpabio’s leadership.

Channels Television reported the appeal on Tuesday morning, triggering widespread public reaction across social media and political circles.

Many Nigerians have taken to X (formerly Twitter) and other platforms to express mixed views over Akpabio’s decision to challenge the court’s directive.

Some critics see the appeal as a deliberate obstruction of justice, accusing the Senate President of attempting to suppress democratic representation.

“Why is Akpabio so invested in blocking Natasha’s return? This is not about legality anymore, it’s about power,” one user wrote.

Human rights activists and legal professionals have also weighed in. Barr. Inibehe Effiong, a prominent Lagos-based lawyer, described the move as “an affront to judicial authority,” urging the courts to stand firm and resist political pressure.

Others, particularly Akpabio’s supporters, argue that the appeal is within his rights and that the matter still requires proper legal interpretation.

“You can’t compel the Senate President to act without exhausting all legal options. Let the appellate court decide,” one political commentator posted.

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan had been controversially removed from her position earlier this year, sparking protests and legal battles over what her team described as an illegal political maneuver.
