According to a report by Dailypost on Monday 14 July, 2025, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has appealed to Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State not to initiate any probe or legal action against former Governor Godwin Obaseki.
Speaking at an event in Benin City, the state capital, where Governor Okpebholo was present, Wike acknowledged the difficulties he personally experienced while backing Obaseki’s rise to office but emphasized the importance of moving forward for the benefit of the state.
He noted that although he endured significant challenges during the political transition, the focus should now shift toward governance and progress in Edo State.
In a rare public admission, Wike referenced his own role in the political tension between both camps, highlighting the pain and betrayal felt during the process. However, he stressed that holding on to grudges would only hinder the state’s development, urging the current administration to prioritize its agenda over political vendettas.
“The one who should be pressing for Obaseki’s prosecution is me; I know what I passed through,” he said.
Governor Okpebholo recently secured his mandate at the Supreme Court, which upheld his election victory against the PDP’s Asue Ighodalo, who was widely supported by Obaseki in the last gubernatorial contest.
Despite the political history, Wike called for reconciliation and governance that transcends personal grievances.
