Former Nigerian Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (Rtd.), has revealed that he and the late President Muhammadu Buhari were both admitted to the same hospital in London before Buhari’s passing on Sunday.
Speaking during an interview with Channels Television on Monday, Abdulsalami confirmed SaharaReporters’ earlier exclusive report that the two former Nigerian leaders were undergoing treatment at the same medical facility in the United Kingdom.
“Unfortunately, we were in the same hospital together, but I have been discharged,” Abdulsalami said.
“So when I heard the news of his passing away, I quickly went there to condole with the family and see what could be done in order to get the corpse ready to be taken home.”
The death of President Muhammadu Buhari, aged 82, was officially announced on Sunday. While plans were initially underway to fly his remains back to Nigeria on Monday for burial in his hometown, Daura, Katsina State, unforeseen logistical challenges forced a shift in schedule.
According to Bashir Ahmad, a former aide to Buhari, the late president’s body is now expected to arrive in Katsina by 12:00 noon on Tuesday, July 15, with burial scheduled for 2:00 PM the same day in accordance with Islamic rites.
“The body of the late President Muhammadu Buhari is expected to arrive in Katsina at 12:00 noon tomorrow, with funeral according to Islamic rites scheduled to take place in his hometown of Daura by 2:00 PM on the same day,” Ahmad posted via his official X account.
