According to a report by Daily Trust on the 14th of July, 2025, Peter Obi has advised the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and other coalition members to consider national unity and historical lessons in their zoning decisions ahead of the next presidential election.
Obi, in a statement that has sparked wide debate online, questioned the logic of fielding another northern candidate when the South has yet to complete its turn. “Why should we have a northerner again when we can easily allow the South to complete their tenure to promote unity and cohesiveness? Afterwards, our northern brothers can take up their eight years,” he said.
He went further to caution against repeating past political mistakes that deeply wounded the country’s democratic foundation. “I urge the coalition to seize this opportunity and avoid repeating the kind of political error that led to the late Moshood Abiola debacle,” Obi warned, referencing the 1993 crisis where the presumed winner of the presidential election, Chief M.K.O. Abiola, was denied his mandate.
His statement comes at a time when power rotation and fairness in political representation have become central topics of discussion, especially within opposition ranks. While some argue for competence over zoning, others believe regional balance is essential for peace and equity.
