According to a report by Al Jazeera on Sunday, July 13, 2025, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian was injured in the leg during an Israeli air strike on June 16, targeting a meeting of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council in western Tehran, according to the IRGC-linked Fars News Agency.
The attack involved six missiles aimed at blocking exits and cutting off ventilation in the underground facility where senior officials were gathered.
Pezeshkian, along with other top figures including Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Judiciary Chief Gholam-Hossein Mohseni Ejei, escaped through an emergency hatch after power was cut to the area.
This strike marked a rare direct hit on Iran’s top leadership during the 12-day conflict with Israel.
The operation was reportedly modeled after Israel’s previous assassination of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in Beirut, using a coordinated missile barrage to trap officials inside the building.
Several officials sustained minor injuries during the evacuation, with Pezeshkian confirming the assassination attempt in a recent interview, stating, “They did try… but they failed” without previously confirming his injury.
In response to the attack, Iranian authorities have launched extensive investigations into possible insider collaboration with Israel, arresting over 700 individuals suspected of espionage.
A new espionage bill proposing the death penalty is also being pushed through the Iranian parliament as part of efforts to tighten internal security.
The air strike and subsequent revelations have intensified tensions in the region, with Iran vowing retaliation. Officials have declared that Israel will “pay the price” for the attempt on Pezeshkian’s life.
This incident underscores the escalating conflict between Tehran and Jerusalem, highlighting the risks faced by Iran’s highest leadership amid ongoing hostilities.
