The national Chairman of the Social Democratic Party, Shehu Gabam has reacted to the statements from the Nigeria Governors (NGF) Forums over the proposed minimum wage by the Federal Government, asserting that any serious governors would pay without borrowing.
Recall that Governors under the aegis of the Nigeria Governors Forum, NGF have said that the N60,000 minimum wage proposal was not sustainable for them to pay, adding that some states will end up borrowing to pay workers every month.
According to the Governors, if they sustain the proposed N60 minimum wage by the Federal Government, it would result in many states spending all their Federation Account Allocation Committee, FAAC allocations on just paying salaries with nothing left for development.
Speaking in an interview with Channel Television on Sunday evening, which was monitored by Sahara Reporters, Gabam advised the governors to remove ghost workers from the payroll and be deliberate about their priorities.
He said, “If you know the number of ghost workers, you will be shocked and amazed. Any governor that is very tough with the system and removes the entire ghost workers in the system…. And you have effective civil service. It is not the size that matters, it is efficiency that matters. They can pay N60,000 comfortably without borrowing….Sée Móre
