Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, has shared details about discussions among opposition leaders on how to select a credible candidate that can defeat President Bola Tinubu in the next election.

Speaking during an interview with Channels Television, Lawal said the opposition coalition, including the African Democratic Congress (ADC), is determined to avoid making the same mistakes of the past.

According to him, one of the key issues they discussed with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar was how to stop selecting leaders who act like emperors once elected. “We said we’re not going to allow that again,” Lawal explained. “We want someone who will follow the will of the party and carry Nigerians along.”

He added that before any candidate is chosen, Nigerians will already know what the person stands for and what each group will gain. This, he said, will prevent surprises and ensure fairness.

Lawal also mentioned that several politicians, including Peter Obi and Rotimi Amaechi, are part of these discussions. “I know Peter Obi. Amaechi has even been to my house. We talked about all these things,” he said.

He stressed the importance of unity, saying that for any real change to happen, all opposition parties must forget personal ambitions and work together. “Without us coming together, there’s no way to remove this government,” he concluded.
