According to a report by The Nigerian Tribune on Friday, July 11, 2025, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has urged members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to remain steadfast and committed to the party’s unity despite internal challenges.

Speaking after a PDP South West caucus meeting in Ibadan on Friday, Makinde appealed to party leaders and members aligning with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s coalition to reconsider their moves and focus on strengthening the PDP.

Makinde likened leaving the PDP to abandoning a house because of a leaking roof, emphasizing that members should stay and fix issues rather than defect.

He noted that the PDP rests on a solid foundation but, like any structure, faces occasional wear and tear.

“You can’t abandon your house because of a leaking roof; you must repair it and reinforce the foundation for the sake of Nigerians,” he said.

He praised the sacrifices of party members and leaders and reaffirmed his dedication to working with major stakeholders to secure PDP’s success in future elections.

Makinde’s comments come as Atiku’s coalition recently adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its platform for the 2027 elections.

Several opposition figures have been making political realignments to challenge President Bola Tinubu.

This has led to notable defections from the PDP, including two governors — Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta and Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom — who joined the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Meanwhile, Atiku Abubakar has denied claims that he was asked to step down for a southern candidate within the ADC.

His media office dismissed the reports as APC propaganda, insisting no such discussions ever took place.
