According to Vanguard News report, the Former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Bode George, has ruled out the possibility of the party fielding a Northern presidential candidate in the 2027 general elections. He said any such move would betray the party’s founding principles and dishonour its late founding fathers.

Speaking during a meeting organized by the Lagos State chapter of the PDP to mark what members described as the party’s “restoration,” George expressed dismay over the wave of defections from the party, while accusing President Bola Tinubu of applying pressure on PDP governors to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“There is no chance that our party will present a candidate from the North in 2027,” George stated. “To do so would be a grave insult to the memories of our founding fathers, many of whom are no longer with us. It amounts to dancing on their graves.”

Citing the example of the late Dr. Alex Ekwueme, George recalled that although Ekwueme lost the PDP presidential ticket, he remained loyal to the party and played his part in building its legacy.

“He didn’t collapse the party simply because he lost the primary. That’s the mark of a God-fearing gentleman. True party men don’t abandon ship at the first sign of trouble,” he said.

Reacting to those leaving the PDP to join emerging coalitions aimed at defeating Tinubu in 2027, George was dismissive, likening them to “rolling stones” with no lasting direction or purpose.

“My advice to those who have broken away to form coalitions is simple—don’t abandon your roots,” he said. “People are being misled. Tinubu and his camp are coercing PDP governors to defect, but power does not ultimately reside with him. It belongs to the people. Nigerians must stay alert.”

He continued: “All these people running around today will eventually return. They’ve tried it before, and they came back. Leaving your political home because of internal cracks is like abandoning your father’s house because the roof is leaking, only to go squat in someone else’s rented apartment.”

George reaffirmed his belief that the PDP remains the most structured and experienced opposition party in Nigeria, urging members to remain steadfast and united as the party repositions ahead of 2027.
