Femi Fani-Kayode (FFK), former Nigerian Minister of Aviation and political analyst, has responded to a viral video of U.S. President Donald Trump questioning Liberian President Joseph Boakai about his English-speaking skills at a 2025 summit with African leaders.
In the widely circulated clip, Trump appeared visibly impressed with Boakai’s eloquence, asking, “Where did you learn to speak English so beautifully?” and “Where were you educated?” The interaction, which took place during a closed-door session, was leaked online and quickly drew mixed reactions from viewers across Africa.
Reacting via his X handle (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, July 10, 2025, Fani-Kayode wrote:
“Donald Trump asking an African President where he was educated because of how well he speaks English in both ignorant and condescending. Africa has what class intellects. Stop the patronizing nonsense.”
FFK further criticized what he described as “subtle racism,” stating that such remarks perpetuate outdated stereotypes that Africans lack formal education or articulation.
While Trump supporters argued that the comment was a compliment and not intended to offend, many African commentators echoed Fani-Kayode’s sentiments, urging global leaders to update their perceptions of the continent.
President Boakai, who studied both in Liberia and the United States, responded calmly in the video, thanking Trump for the compliment.
