Kenneth Okonkwo, a top member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has stated that Peter Obi may not become Nigeria’s president in 2027, as reported by Nigerian Tribune on Wednesday, 9th July, 2025.
Okonkwo, who once served as Obi’s campaign spokesperson in 2023, said the former Labour Party candidate lacks the political strength to defeat President Bola Tinubu.
He believes Nigeria’s power structure favors certain regions.
He explained that a candidate from the Southeast would face too many obstacles.
He also said even if such a person wins, the system may not allow them to succeed.
In the 2023 election, Obi came third with over six million votes but Okonkwo claimed the election was rigged against him.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has rejected these claims.
Okonkwo left the Labour Party in July 2024 after disagreements with the party’s leadership.
He is now with the ADC and has changed his political strategy, he plans to support a strong northern candidate in the 2027 election.
According to him, only a popular northern figure can gather enough support to defeat Tinubu.
He mentioned Atiku Abubakar, Nasir El-Rufai, and Aminu Tambuwal as possible options.
He warned that presenting another southern candidate against Tinubu would only help the current president.
Tinubu, also from the South, may benefit if the opposition is divided.
“If you bring somebody from the Southeast, even if he wins, they will steal it from him.”
“Peter Obi won the election in 2023, and they stole it from us,” he said.
