Spanish authorities have revealed that the devastating crash which killed Liverpool star Diogo Jota, 28, and his younger brother André Silva, 25, was caused by a combination of high speed and a tyre blowout while the pair were driving a rented £185,000 Lamborghini Huracán.
The incident occurred in the early hours of July 2, 2025, on the A-52 motorway near Cernadilla, in the Zamora province of northern Spain. According to Spain’s Civil Guard, the supercar was travelling well over the 120 km/h speed limit when a rear tyre burst during an overtaking maneuver. The vehicle veered off the road, slammed into barriers, and exploded into flames—killing both brothers on the spot.
Authorities stated that the tyre failure was sudden and violent, likely causing the driver—believed to be Jota himself—to lose control. Witnesses said the explosion that followed lit up the night sky, and emergency services arrived to find the car already engulfed in flames.
Jota had reportedly chosen to drive from Portugal to Santander, where he was planning to board a ferry back to the UK, rather than fly due to a recent lung surgery. The trip turned tragic just ten days after his wedding, leaving behind a grieving wife and three young children.
The deadly crash has sparked further scrutiny, as a woman reportedly survived a near-fatal crash on the same stretch of road just eight days prior. Experts have called attention to possible design flaws or safety issues with that section of the highway, though no official link has been confirmed.
As fans across the football world mourn the shocking loss, tributes have poured in from Liverpool FC, fellow Premier League stars, and even Prince William and Cristiano Ronaldo, who expressed condolences to the Jota family and the global football community.
The Spanish traffic division has confirmed that a full technical report is being finalized, while an official investigation remains underway in the Puebla de Sanabria judicial district.
